The Agreement was signed in 2004 and came into effect on 1 January 2006. SAFTA aims at lowering trade tariffs to 20 %by 2007. Some in India think that SAFTA is not worth the trouble since India already has bilateral agreements with Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
Gross National Happiness (GNH) In Bhutan
Bhutan is the only country in the world to officially proclaim the Gross National Happiness (GNH) as the measure of the country’s progress. Material progress and technological developments are approached more cautiously taking into consideration the possible harm they might bring to the environment or the other aspects of the cultural and spiritual life of the Bhutanese. This means merely material progress cannot come at the cost of happiness. GNH encourages us to think of the religious, non-material and qualitative aspects of development.
